Cultivation & Care Tips (The Self-Sufficiency Garden)
Garden Planning & Pre-cultivation: Start the gardening year indoors: pre-sow peppers, chilies, and tomatoes on the windowsill from February/March. As soon as the soil is frost-free (from March/April), robust varieties like carrots, radishes, and looseleaf lettuce can be sown directly into the bed.
Location & Soil: A self-sufficiency bed requires a full-sun, sheltered location. Prepare the soil in spring with mature compost or organic fertilizer to provide sufficient nutrients for heavy feeders (such as tomatoes and cucumbers).
Companion Planting & Bees: Take advantage of companion planting! Plant basil near tomatoes. The included sunflowers attract pollinators to your garden, which are essential for the fertilization of vegetable plants (such as cucumbers).
